Fall 2010 in Kuusamo, Finland

22 Sep

Up north the beautiful colors of the foliage are almost gone. A week or two from now, all the yellows and reds will turn to a uniform brown.  The forest smells sweet, it’s the smell of decay. But hardly anything dies in the fall. Everywhere you look, you see the seeds of the next spring.

I’m glad that I like all the seasons. But I can’t decide which is more beautiful: fall, or the time when winter turns towards spring sometime around February, and the sun shines again, now on a blindingly bright landscape.

"the hat of a summer day"

I love fungi especially, and paying attention to where and how they grow. Thinking of their part in a complex, symbiotic relationship with a particular tree, and generally everything around them.
